Sifuna Hits Back at Ruto Over Western Kenya Politics and Housing Debate
Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna has delivered a fiery response to President William Ruto after the Head of State urged residents of Busia County and the broader Western region to reject opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 polls.
Addressing rallies in Western Kenya through his Linda Mwananchi movement, Sifuna dismissed President Ruto’s remarks that electing opposition figures would derail national development, doubling down instead on a lighthearted yet sharp critique of the government’s Affordable Housing Programme.
Taking aim at high-rise multi-storey units being constructed under the national housing initiative, the ODM Secretary-General humorously noted that multi-storey buildings without lifts do not reflect the cultural and practical needs of everyday families in the region.
“We cannot live in places where our chicken cannot enter. How will our chicken get to the 12th floor?” Sifuna quipped during a radio interview, later asserting on social media that as a native of the region, he understands local poultry keeping better than the President.
President Ruto had earlier hit back at Sifuna’s remarks during an address at State House, branding the argument as lacking logic and urging citizens to support Kenya Kwanza’s agenda instead. Unfazed by the President’s rebuke, Sifuna maintained that development projects must align with the practical realities of local communities.

Beyond the housing spat, Sifuna urged the Western region to rally behind a fresh political vision and support his 2027 presidential bid.
He challenged voters to move away from legacy politicians, specifically mentioning Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, arguing that despite decades in power, seasoned leaders have delivered limited transformative impact to the community.
As political temperatures rise ahead of the next general election, Western Kenya remains a central battleground for both the government and a recharged opposition.
