Video: Edwin Sifuna Finally Reveals The Day Raila Almost ‘Killed’ Him
A startling revelation by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has stirred fresh debate within Kenya’s political circles after he recounted a dramatic encounter with the late party leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview, Sifuna opened up about a tense moment in 2021 when a communication he released nearly landed him in serious trouble with his party boss.
According to Sifuna, the incident happened on March 31, 2021, during a high-level ODM meeting attended by Odinga and other senior leaders.
Sifuna narrated that during the closed-door session, he directly asked Odinga whether he intended to run for the presidency in the 2022 General Election.

In what appeared to be a clear response at the time, Odinga allegedly confirmed his interest in the race. Acting on that understanding, Sifuna swiftly drafted and sent a communication to media houses announcing Odinga’s candidature.
However, the move would soon backfire.
The following day, Sifuna says he received a call from an angry Odinga at around 3 p.m., questioning the reports circulating in the media.
The ODM leader, known for his calculated political approach, reportedly reprimanded Sifuna for making a premature announcement without broader consultation.
In a surprising twist, Odinga instructed Sifuna to issue a new statement dismissing the earlier communication as an April Fool’s Day prank. The directive, however, did not sit well with sections of the media, with some editors reportedly criticizing Sifuna and questioning his professionalism.
The revelation has reignited conversations about internal decision-making within ODM and the late Odinga’s strategic grip on political messaging.
Before his death, Odinga had maintained that the party had not settled on a presidential candidate, even warning supporters against prematurely campaigning for President William Ruto’s re-election or any other political direction.
Sifuna’s account offers a rare glimpse into the high-stakes and often unpredictable nature of political communication at the highest levels of Kenya’s opposition politics.
