COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has finally weighed in on the long-running debate over what went wrong during the 2022 General Election that saw the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga lose the presidential race, despite enjoying the public backing of then President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s JKL Live hosted by renowned journalist Jeff Koinange, Atwoli made a bold claim, placing responsibility for Raila Odinga’s defeat squarely on Uhuru Kenyatta.

According to Atwoli, the former president failed to fully execute the political and logistical support required to secure Raila’s victory.

When pressed by Koinange on who should take responsibility for the loss, Atwoli did not mince his words.

He argued that while Uhuru openly endorsed Raila, key decisions and resources that could have strengthened the campaign were not effectively deployed.

“Endorsement alone is not enough to win an election,” Atwoli noted, hinting at internal failures within the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

Atwoli’s remarks come amid fresh drama within ODM following allegations that Suna East MP Junet Mohammed misappropriated agents’ funds during the 2022 polls—claims that have fueled a public fallout between Junet and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.

Critics argue that the alleged failure to facilitate agents on the ground left Raila’s vote vulnerable.

However, Atwoli rushed to Junet’s defense, insisting that the accusations are misplaced. He maintained that the money meant for agents was never released in the first place, placing the blame once again on Uhuru Kenyatta’s camp.

According to Atwoli, Junet is being unfairly targeted for failures beyond his control.

The revelations have reignited debate over the true causes of Raila Odinga’s defeat, exposing deep cracks within the opposition and raising uncomfortable questions as ODM struggles to reorganize itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.
