The atmosphere inside New York’s packed basketball arena was electric long before tip-off, with thousands of fans filling the stands for one of the biggest sporting events of the year.

Celebrities, business leaders and political figures were among those in attendance as anticipation built ahead of a crucial NBA Finals showdown between the hometown team and their rivals.

What began as a celebration of basketball, however, quickly became one of the of the night’s most talked-about moments.

US President Donald Trump received a mixed but largely hostile reception from sections of the crowd when he appeared on the arena’s giant video screens during the game. Loud boos echoed across the venue, while some supporters responded with cheers, creating a brief but noticeable clash of reactions among spectators.

The appearance marked a historic moment, as Trump became the first sitting US president to attend an NBA Finals game. His presence drew significant attention both inside the arena and across social media, where videos of the crowd’s reaction spread rapidly.

Witnesses said the crowd noise intensified as cameras focused on the president seated courtside alongside members of his entourage.

While some fans applauded and waved, others expressed their disapproval through sustained booing.

The incident underscored the deep political divisions that continue to characterize American public life. Trump remains one of the most polarizing figures in US politics, capable of drawing strong support and equally strong opposition wherever he appears.

Despite the reaction, the president appeared unfazed. Television broadcasts showed him acknowledging those around him and continuing to watch the game as normal.

Security around the presidential party was noticeably heightened, with Secret Service personnel maintaining a strong presence throughout the event.

Political figures attending major sporting events is not uncommon in the United States, but reactions from crowds often reflect broader public sentiments.

Previous presidents have also faced mixed receptions at sporting venues, though Trump’s appearances frequently attract heightened attention due to his unique political profile.

The NBA Finals game itself remained the main attraction, with fans focusing on the high-stakes contest after the brief interruption. Players continued without distraction, and league officials did not comment publicly on the crowd’s reaction.

Nevertheless, Trump’s attendance became one of the defining off-court storylines of the evening. As clips of the moment circulated online, debate quickly emerged over whether the reaction reflected New York’s political leanings, dissatisfaction with the president’s policies, or simply the passion of a crowd eager to express its views.

For many observers, the scene served as another reminder of how politics and sports continue to intersect in modern America, even on basketball’s biggest stage.
