Trouble for Gachagua’s DCP in Ol-Kalou as Uhuru and Karua Make New Declarations
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing a fresh political test in the Mount Kenya region as new developments emerge ahead of the Ol-Kalou by-election in Nyandarua County.
Gachagua, who has been positioning himself as the region’s political kingpin through his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), may now have to rethink his strategy amid growing competition within the opposition.
The by-election is shaping up to be a critical battleground, with divisions within the United opposition threatening to hand an advantage to rivals.
Martha Karua has publicly declared that her party will field a candidate in the Ol-Kalou race, emphasizing her democratic right to participate. Karua maintained that Kenya’s multi-party democracy allows every political outfit to contest freely, dismissing calls for a unified opposition candidate.

At the same time, the Jubilee Party, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has also announced plans to field its own candidate. This move further complicates the political landscape, raising concerns about a fragmented opposition vote in the region.
Political analysts warn that the lack of unity among opposition leaders could benefit the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), which is expected to present a strong contender. With multiple candidates from opposition factions, the vote may split, weakening their overall chances of securing victory.
For Gachagua and his DCP, the situation presents a dual challenge — consolidating support within the Mount Kenya region while also negotiating alliances with other opposition leaders.
The Ol-Kalou by-election is now seen as a litmus test that could redefine political influence in Nyandarua County and beyond, especially as the country gradually shifts focus toward the 2027 general election.
