The United Republic of Tanzania has issued a statement alleging that a man identified as a Kenyan-American citizen serving in the United States military was arrested on Sunday evening at the Sirari border point while in possession of four M68 hand grenades.
According to a press statement shared by Tanzania’s Ayo TV and purported to be from the Tarime Province police commander, the suspect, identified as Charles Onkuri Ongeta, was intercepted while driving a Toyota Land Cruiser with Kenyan registration number KDP 502.
The statement claims that the vehicle had crossed into Tanzania from the Kenyan side before officers reportedly found the explosives during an inspection.
Tanzanian police officials say the arrest took place as part of heightened security operations along the border following recent tension between the two countries.

The alleged discovery comes just days after several Kenyans were reported killed in Tanzania during unrest linked to post-election protests—an incident that has triggered public concern and diplomatic unease.
The purported police communication indicates that Ongeta, whom they describe as an active member of the US military, is being held for further investigations as authorities seek to establish the motive behind his alleged possession of military-grade grenades.
As of Monday, the Kenyan government had not issued an official response to Tanzania’s claims, and it remains unclear whether Nairobi has sought clarification or legal assistance regarding the reported arrest.
Similarly, there has been no confirmation from United States authorities concerning the suspect’s alleged military affiliation.
The incident is expected to test diplomatic relations, with both countries facing pressure to issue clear statements amid rising public speculation. More details are anticipated once official government responses are released.
