A fresh political storm is brewing in the Ukambani region, posing a new challenge to former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as he eyes the presidency in the 2027 general election.
Kalonzo, who has long been considered the region’s political kingpin, is working to position himself as a formidable opposition figure capable of unseating President William Ruto.
However, recent remarks by Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse have cast doubt on Kalonzo’s influence in his traditional stronghold.
In a poster that has since sparked debate online, Mutuse claimed that Ukambani is steadily shifting towards the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), raising concerns about Kalonzo’s grip on the region.

Mutuse went further to dismiss Kalonzo’s Wiper Democratic Movement as a “village party,” arguing that it currently lacks the national appeal needed to secure a presidential victory.
He accused the former Vice President of misleading supporters about his political strength, insisting that influence in Ukambani alone would not be sufficient to clinch the top seat.
The claims highlight a growing political realignment in the region, which has historically backed Kalonzo in successive elections.
Analysts suggest that the perceived UDA inroads could significantly weaken his bargaining power within the opposition and complicate efforts to build a united front against Ruto.
As the 2027 race begins to take shape, Kalonzo now faces the urgent task of consolidating his support base at home while expanding his national appeal.
Political observers argue that without a strong and united Ukambani backing, his presidential ambitions could face an uphill battle in a highly competitive electoral landscape.
Currently in the queue to vote at Nyayo Polling Station for the UDA grassroots elections.
We are witnessing a massive turnout. This is the LIBERATION moment.
