Martha Karua Blasts Senator Karen Nyamu Over “Reprehensible” Treatment of Student in Senate
NAIROBI, Kenya — Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua has issued a scathing rebuke of Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu following an incident in the Senate that has sparked nationwide outrage. Karua described Nyamu’s behavior toward a Grade 10 student as “reprehensible and unacceptable,” calling for a return to dignity in public office.
The controversy stems from an incident on March 25, 2026, when Senator Nyamu was recorded making what have been described as “disrespectful and inappropriate” comments to a student named Gabriella, who was visiting the Senate to observe legislative proceedings. The fallout from the event was immediate, with Nyamu eventually being forced to apologize on the floor of the House.

A Call for Dignity
In a strongly worded response, the veteran politician and former Justice Minister expressed her disappointment in the conduct of the Nominated Senator. Karua highlighted the damage such interactions do to the aspirations of young Kenyans.
“She [Gabriella] came to Parliament to witness democracy in action and perhaps to imagine herself in leadership one day,” Karua stated. “Instead, she was humiliated by a leader entrusted to protect the dignity of citizens, especially the young ones.”
Karua, speaking as a mother and a long-time advocate for women’s inclusion in public life, emphasized that the current behavior in the Senate does not reflect the standard of leadership she and others fought for over decades.
“Karibu Chai”
Directing her message to the student, Karua urged Gabriella not to let the encounter diminish her dreams. In a gesture of mentorship, she extended a warm invitation to the young learner to meet with seasoned female leaders.
- Support for the Youth: “Gabriella, do not let this moment diminish your voice or your dreams,” Karua encouraged.
- The Invitation: She concluded her statement with a hospitable offer: “Karibu chai, Gabriella,” promising to show the student that women can indeed serve in leadership with purpose and grace.
The incident has reignited a national debate regarding the conduct of nominated leaders and the necessity of maintaining the Senate’s prestige as an institution of honor.
