The late Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leader, Honorable Raila Odinga, was widely regarded as one of the most formidable and influential politicians in the history of the Republic of Kenya before his death on October 15, 2025.
Even after his passing, Raila’s political legacy continues to dominate national conversations, with many leaders recalling how he mentored them and shaped their political journeys.
Fresh details of one of the most critical moments in Raila Odinga’s early political life have now emerged.
Speaking at the funeral service of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Honorable Cyrus Jirongo, Siaya Governor James Orengo revealed how Raila almost lost the opportunity to vie for the Lang’ata parliamentary seat — a race that later became a key turning point in his political career.

According to Orengo, Raila’s ambitions were nearly cut short after concerns were raised over his ability to effectively communicate in Kiswahili, which at the time was considered crucial for candidates seeking elective office.
Orengo disclosed that Raila was reportedly blocked from being cleared to contest for the Lang’ata seat due to these concerns, a development that threatened to derail his political dream.
Faced with the setback, Orengo said he advised Raila to seek help from the late Cyrus Jirongo, who was already a powerful and influential figure within political circles.
Jirongo, known for his political networks and strategic skills, stepped in and intervened with the Independent Electoral Commission officials of the time.
Following Jirongo’s intervention, Raila was cleared to contest, paving the way for his entry into elective politics.
Orengo described Jirongo as a courageous leader who believed in Raila’s vision and potential, crediting him for saving a political career that would later transform Kenya’s political landscape.
The revelation has reignited appreciation for the behind-the-scenes alliances that shaped Raila Odinga’s rise and highlighted Cyrus Jirongo’s often overlooked role in Kenya’s political history.
