A Legacy Driven by Bar Reforms
Throughout her leadership journey, Wanjeri championed a series of transformative motions aimed at lowering the cost of practice and improving governance standards for Kenyan advocates.
Among her most notable achievements was her successful push to make Continuing Professional Development (CPD) more affordable and accessible. She moved a landmark motion to award 2 CPD points for online webinars at a standardized rate of KSh 1,500—an initiative that was passed and implemented, earning her the affectionate nickname “Wanjeri wa CPD” among her peers.
Her member-centric agenda earned her widespread praise across the bar. Her notable key contributions include:
- Free Certificates of Good Standing: She successfully moved a motion ensuring that fully paid-up LSK members receive their Certificates of Good Standing free of charge, eliminating unnecessary administrative fees.
- Transition to Digital Publications: As council representative to the Editorial Committee, she advocated for the adoption of an e-journal, ushering in a convenient and cost-effective era for LSK publications.
- Promoting Transparency and Governance: Wanjeri introduced a motion establishing a running Conflict of Interest Register for the LSK Council and Secretariat, significantly enhancing operational accountability.
- Human Rights and Legal Training: As representative to the Medico-Legal Committee, she facilitated a tripartite agreement between the LSK, Kenya Medical Association (KMA), and Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU). The partnership focused on training advocates in forensic documentation and strategic public interest litigation, particularly crucial in combating human rights abuses, state-sanctioned abductions, and extrajudicial actions.
- Devolution of Services: She initiated critical debates on establishing inspectorate departments across LSK branches to tackle professional misconduct and unmask unqualified legal practitioners at the local level.
Tributes Pour In
colleagues and members of the bar have expressed deep shock over her passing, celebrating her as an unwavering champion for young advocates and institutional integrity.
“Wakili Wanjeri was a fearless defender of advocates’ rights and a visionary leader who genuinely cared about the day-to-day welfare of lawyers,” noted an LSK member in a tribute. “Her legacy through CPD reforms and transparency measures will continue to serve this society for generations.”
Burial arrangements and official funeral plans are expected to be announced by her family and the Law Society of Kenya in the coming days.
