DP Kindiki Rejects Calls to Join Opposition, Pledges to Fight for Space in Ruto’s Govt
MERU, Kenya — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has firmly dismissed calls from political allies to abandon President William Ruto’s administration, insisting that leaders from Mt Kenya East must remain inside the Kenya Kwanza government and fight for their fair share of development from within.
Speaking during a public address at Kariene Market in Meru County, the Deputy President directly addressed speculations urging him to break ranks with President Ruto and team up with opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Kindiki argued that after investing heavily in building and shaping the current administration, walking away to join the opposition would be politically illogical.
“You do not build a house, complete it, furnish it, and then abandon it to go live in the forest,” Kindiki stated, drawing cheers from the crowd. “We built this government, put up the plaster, furnished it with a sofa set and a TV. I cannot abandon it now.”

Kindiki cautioned residents against shifting allegiances based purely on political positions, emphasizing that government projects and national representation remain consistent regardless of regional leadership dynamics.
He noted that while the administration has broadened its base to welcome former opposition stalwarts—such as Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya—the core team that formed the government remains committed to staying the course.
Dismissing the viability of moving to the opposition camp, the Deputy President pointed out that the rival political space is already crowded with senior leaders vying for top slots.
He stressed that staying inside the ruling coalition provides the region with maximum leverage to push for key infrastructure projects and secure long-term political influence as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.
Kindiki’s passionate defense comes amid rising political friction in Meru, where local lawmakers recently voiced frustration over delayed development projects.
However, the Deputy President maintained that remaining inside the executive remains Mt Kenya East’s strongest bargaining chip.
