The burial of the late Lugari Member of Parliament, Honorable Cyrus Jirongo, descended into chaos on Monday as Busia County Governor, His Excellency Paul Otuoma, was heckled and forced to end his speech prematurely.
The incident unfolded at Lumakanda, Lugari Constituency, where mourners had gathered to pay their last respects to the political stalwart.
Governor Otuoma took the podium and immediately turned the spotlight on Siaya County Governor, His Excellency James Orengo, criticizing him over remarks he had made about the Orange Democratic Party (ODM).
Orengo had earlier accused a faction within the party of allegedly plotting to “sell” the party, a statement that did not sit well with Otuoma.
In his address, Otuoma urged Governor Orengo to exercise discretion and refrain from airing internal party matters in public, particularly during solemn occasions such as funerals.
He insisted that such sensitive discussions should wait for official party meetings, where they could be handled appropriately.
However, the message did not go down well with the mourners. A section of the crowd erupted in boos and shouts, expressing disapproval of the governor’s criticisms of Orengo during the funeral.

The tension escalated to the point where Otuoma had no choice but to cut short his speech and leave the stage, as security personnel and aides tried to calm the situation.
Political analysts suggest that the incident highlights the delicate balance politicians must maintain between personal and party interests, especially during public events honoring late leaders.
Social media platforms quickly lit up with videos of the confrontation, prompting debates about political etiquette and respect for mourning families.
The funeral of Honorable Cyrus Jirongo, meant to be a moment of unity and tribute, instead showcased how political rivalries can flare even in the most solemn of settings.
