MACHAKOS, Kenya — Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2027 presidential ambitions have hit a sudden roadblock following an unexpected political shift in his home turf of Ukambani.
The Wiper Democratic Movement leader, who has been strategically positioning himself to lead a united opposition coalition to make President William Ruto a one-term president, is facing a severe rebellion from local leaders.
In a surprising turn of events, Kibwezi West Member of Parliament, Honorable Mwengi Mutuse, led a delegation declaring that the Ukambani region is officially shifting its allegiance away from the Wiper party to join the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
This declaration deals a massive blow to Kalonzo’s foundational support structure, which he has heavily relied upon to negotiate national political alliances.

Addressing residents and leaders, Mutuse launched a scathing attack on the veteran politician, accusing him of using the Kamba community for personal political gain without delivering substantive economic growth.
“For a very long time, Kalonzo Musyoka has benefited from the unwavering political backing of the Ukambani region, yet he has failed to bring any meaningful development to our people,” Mutuse stated.
The lawmaker emphasized that the region can no longer afford to languish in the opposition while remaining detached from the national government’s development agenda.
He maintained that joining UDA is a calculated move to ensure the Ukambani region secures robust infrastructure, water projects, and economic empowerment directly from the state.
Political analysts warn that this unexpected fallout could severely dismantle Kalonzo’s 2027 strategy. Without a solid, unified voting bloc from his Eastern stronghold, his leverage within the opposition alliance will be greatly diminished, handing President Ruto a significant advantage as the political landscape reshapes ahead of the 2027 general election.
