A growing political storm is brewing in Bungoma County, dealing a potential setback to Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa in his bid to become the county’s next governor.
Barasa, who has served two terms as Kimilili MP, has publicly declared his interest in succeeding incumbent Governor Kenneth Lusaka. However, his ambitions are now facing significant resistance from a section of leaders within the county, signaling an early and intense battle ahead of the next general election.
The latest blow came during a press briefing held in Bungoma, where Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama, flanked by more than 11 Members of Parliament from the region, announced their endorsement of Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi as their preferred gubernatorial candidate.
The leaders, among them Sirisia MP John Waluke, cited Wanyonyi’s leadership track record and experience as key reasons for backing his candidacy.

According to Wanyama, Wanyonyi possesses the vision and capacity needed to transform Bungoma County and steer it toward economic growth and improved service delivery.
The leaders urged residents to rally behind him, arguing that unity among leaders would be crucial in ensuring development in the county.
This endorsement is seen as a major political setback for Barasa, who had been positioning himself as a frontrunner in the race.
Analysts note that the move could significantly reshape the political landscape in Bungoma, especially if more leaders and voters align themselves with Wanyonyi.
With political temperatures already rising, the race for Bungoma’s top seat is shaping up to be highly competitive. As alliances begin to form and shift, Barasa will need to recalibrate his strategy to counter the growing opposition and maintain his relevance in the contest.
The coming months are expected to define the direction of the race.
