A fiery address by Edwin Sifuna in Mombasa has sent fresh shockwaves through the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), deepening the ongoing rift within the party.
Speaking at Tononoka Grounds, the Nairobi Senator launched a bold offensive against a rival faction aligned with Oburu Odinga, which has been pushing for his removal as ODM Secretary General.
The faction had reportedly endorsed Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo as his replacement, a move that Sifuna has strongly rejected.
In his address, Sifuna maintained that he remains the legitimate Secretary General of ODM, as well as the Senate Minority Leader, dismissing efforts to oust him as politically motivated.

“Those attempting to remove me should try harder,” he declared to a charged crowd, signaling his unwillingness to back down amid the escalating power struggle.
Sifuna further drew comparisons to the late party leader Raila Odinga, stating that his leadership style is rooted in listening to the concerns of ordinary citizens.
The remarks have been widely interpreted as a direct critique of the Oburu-led faction, which he accused of drifting away from the party’s founding principles.
The senator also used the platform to rally support for the “Linda Mwananchi” initiative, urging Kenyans to register in large numbers. He hinted that the movement would soon unveil a decisive political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election, potentially reshaping alliances within and beyond ODM.
The unfolding dispute underscores growing divisions within the party, raising concerns about its unity and future. Political analysts warn that if the wrangles persist, they could weaken ODM’s influence on the national stage as the country gradually shifts focus to the next electoral cycle.
