GATUNDU, KENYA — A weekend getaway turned into a nightmare after a young man tragically drowned at the Kieni Forest Waterfalls in Gatundu North.
The deceased has been identified as Abdishakur Ali Ibrein, a recent graduate of KCA University and the son of Ali Ibrein, an official at the National Land Commission (NLC).
The harrowing incident, which occurred during a hiking and swimming excursion with friends, was captured in a viral video that has sent shockwaves across social media.

According to local reports, Abdishakur was enjoying a swim with a group of friends when he suddenly encountered distress in the water. The widely circulated video footage shows the young man visibly struggling to stay afloat and calling out to his nearby friends for assistance.

As the gravity of the situation became clear, one friend desperately attempted a rescue.
Tragically, the turbulent waters and undercurrents proved too strong, and the rescue effort failed. Moments later, Abdishakur slipped beneath the surface and sank to the bottom of the waterfall.
Public Outcry and Safety Concerns
The heartbreaking footage has sparked intense debate and grief online, leaving Kenyans with more questions than answers regarding safety at local excursion sites.
Many are calling for stricter safety measures, including visible warning signs and the deployment of trained lifeguards at popular but treacherous natural attractions like Kieni Forest.
“It is deeply traumatizing to watch a young life cut short so suddenly. Our youth need to be highly cautious when venturing into deep, unregulated waters,” noted one local resident online.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution while visiting waterfalls and deep water bodies, particularly during hiking expeditions where water depths and currents can be deceptive.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
