Trouble in Mount Kenya: Gachagua Claps Back at Munya After Explosive Remarks
Political tensions in the Mount Kenya region escalated following a fiery exchange between former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Munya over the region’s political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The dispute erupted after Munya, joined by Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi and Devolution Empowerment Party (DEP) leader Lenny Kivuti, publicly accused Gachagua of trying to force small regional political outfits to dissolve and merge into his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Munya warned that such pressure threatens democratic pluralism and infringes on the constitutional rights of party members.
Hitting back at the allegations, Gachagua dismissed the claims as baseless, maintaining that he respects the autonomy of smaller parties within Mount Kenya.

The former Deputy President stressed that DCP welcomes healthy multi-party competition and has no intention of eliminating rival political formations.
To demonstrate his commitment to supporting allied outfits, Gachagua pointed to his recent political maneuvers in Embu County.
He noted that he withdrew DCP’s candidate in the Mbeere North by-election to back Newton Kariuki (popularly known as Karish), a DP candidate allied to Justin Muturi. Gachagua highlighted that he personally spent ten days on the ground campaigning for Karish to secure victory.
While defending his efforts to build a unified political block, Gachagua urged regional leaders to focus on strengthening their own parties rather than engaging in political squabbles.
He reiterated that while multi-party competition is healthy at the local level, Mount Kenya leaders must remain united in their broader strategic goals heading into 2027.
