Trouble for CS Oparanya as Ruto Is Told to Fire Him Over Kakamega Politics
Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya is facing mounting pressure as political wrangles intensify within the Western region. Oparanya, who joined President William Ruto’s broad-based administration following youth-led nationwide protests in 2024, was brought into the Cabinet as part of the experts deployed from the opposition to assist in managing government affairs. However, his recent political engagements have sparked sharp criticism from local leaders.
Speaking in Kakamega County, Governor Fernandes Barasa launched a direct attack on his predecessor, urging President Ruto to dismiss Oparanya from his Cabinet post immediately.
Barasa expressed frustration over what he described as Oparanya’s relentless involvement in local political squabbles rather than prioritizing his ministerial mandate to deliver on the Kenya Kwanza administration’s development agenda.

“This Cabinet Secretary has forgotten his national duties and is spending his time engaging in divisive local politics in Kakamega,” Barasa stated during an address.
He argued that Oparanya was appointed to unite the region and foster development, but has instead become a source of political conflict that hinders governance. Barasa appealed to President Ruto to relieve the Cabinet Secretary of his duties if he continues to prioritize political posturing over service delivery.
The fallout highlights deepening factional divisions within the county, with local leaders warning that continued political wrangling could derail key development projects intended for the region. Neither CS Oparanya nor State House has officially issued a public response regarding the Governor’s demands.
