Mike Sonko Refuses to Dissolve NEDP, Rejects Pressure to Join Kalonzo’s Wiper Party
Former Nairobi Governor Gideon Mbuvi Sonko has put an end to mounting speculation over his political alignment, firmly rejecting calls to collapse his newly established political outfit and join the Wiper Democratic Movement, led by Kalonzo Musyoka.
In a video that has quickly circulated across social media, the flamboyant politician clarified his stance following growing pressure from leaders in the Ukambani region urging him to fold his party in favor of Wiper.
While Kalonzo’s party has long maintained a dominant grip on the region’s political landscape, Sonko’s active moves have introduced a new dynamic to Ukambani power politics.
Speaking directly to his supporters, Sonko emphasized that while he holds immense respect for Kalonzo Musyoka and the Wiper party, he has no intention of abandoning his political autonomy.

“I respect Kalonzo Musyoka as a senior leader and I respect Wiper, but people must also respect my political decisions,” Sonko declared in the video. “I will not dissolve my party. We have our own vision, our own strategy, and our own independent path forward.”
Sonko’s response comes amidst heightened interest surrounding his vehicle, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP). Officially registered on December 9, 2025, as Kenya’s 92nd fully registered political party, NEDP was founded by Sonko to focus on economic transformation, grassroots development, and youth empowerment.
Headquartered at Ramco Court Block in Nairobi under the chairmanship of Dr. John Nyamu, the outfit has been aggressively building grassroots structures across the country ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
By maintaining the independence of the National Economic Development Party, Sonko signals his intent to remain a key decision-maker on the national stage, challenging the traditional political hegemony in Ukambani while offering an alternative platform for his supporters.
