United Opposition Principals Seal Unity Pact at Windsor Hotel Amid Notable Absences
Key figures of Kenya’s opposition assembled at the Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County on 24 August 2026 under the banner of The United Alternative Government of Kenya.
Led by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, and former Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi, the leaders convened to chart a unified political path ahead of the upcoming 2027 General Election.
Following high-level consultations, the alliance issued an official press release titled “Country Above Self: United Alternative Government Principals Seal a Covenant of Unity.”
In the joint statement, the principals announced that they have unanimously agreed to execute a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement.
Under this framework, each principal commits individually and collectively to remain united, establish a credible process for selecting a single presidential candidate, and fully support the chosen flagbearer during the campaign trail.

However, the meeting raised immediate eyebrows due to the conspicuous absence of prominent opposition figures Edwin Sifuna and Democracy for Change Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua.
Neither leader was present at the Windsor briefing, an omission that quickly sparked widespread debate across social media platforms.
Political commentators and citizens online expressed mixed reactions, with many demanding an explanation regarding whether their absence signals emerging cracks or tactical realignment within the broader opposition unit.
Despite the speculation, the coalition principals emphasized their commitment to alternative governance, reassuring supporters: “We recognise that millions of Kenyans are looking beyond individual leaders and political parties… Our answer today is unequivocal: Kenya comes first.”
