Kirinyaga Mourns as Long-Serving Special Elect MCA Beatrice Njoki Mitaru Dies
Kirinyaga County is in mourning following the death of Hon. Beatrice Njoki Mitaru, the specially elected Member of the County Assembly (MCA) representing Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Mitaru passed away in the early hours of Monday at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri, where she had been undergoing treatment.
Governor Anne Waiguru confirmed the sad news, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a lawmaker she praised as a committed public servant and a steadfast advocate for inclusion. Waiguru noted that Mitaru was a strong voice for the rights of persons with disabilities, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, dedicated service, and passion for her community.
First nominated to the Kirinyaga County Assembly following the 2017 General Election under the Jubilee Party, Mitaru earned a second term after the 2022 elections under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party. Her continuous service made her one of the longest-serving specially elected MCAs in the county’s history.

Throughout her tenure, Mitaru held key leadership roles, including vice-chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Finance and Economic Planning. She also actively served on the Business Committee, Women Caucus, and committees overseeing Gender, Youth, Environment, and Agriculture. Beyond the county level, she spearheaded national advocacy as the chairperson of the Persons with Disabilities Chapter within the County Assemblies Forum (CAF).
The Speaker of the Kirinyaga County Assembly issued an official notification expressing condolences and honoring her extensive contributions across multiple legislative terms. Tributes have poured in from fellow leaders, colleagues, and local residents who remembered her unwavering dedication to empowering marginalized groups and serving the people of Kirinyaga.
Mitaru is survived by her son, family, and loved ones. Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family and county leadership in due course.
