A political storm is brewing in Western Kenya after a viral video captured a tense exchange involving a Cabinet Secretary in President William Ruto’s administration, highlighting growing resistance to the so-called “two-term gospel” ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In the video, the Cabinet Secretary—widely understood to be Wycliffe Oparanya—appears to face sharp criticism during a public function in Kakamega County.
The backlash was led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, who openly challenged Oparanya’s political messaging and performance in government.
Speaking at the event, Khalwale accused the CS of prioritizing political campaigns over tangible development in the Western region, also known as the Mulembe Nation.
He claimed that while leaders are being urged to rally behind President Ruto’s bid for a second term, the region has yet to see meaningful projects that match those being implemented in other parts of the country.

“Kenyans are being told about two terms, yet development is uneven,” Khalwale stated, arguing that Western Kenya continues to lag behind regions such as Central and Nyanza in terms of infrastructure and economic investment.
The senator further urged Oparanya to shift focus from political rhetoric to advocating for the needs of his constituents, warning that failure to do so could have serious political consequences come 2027.
According to Khalwale, leaders who fail to deliver tangible results risk losing public trust despite their alignment with the national government.
President Ruto, who has recently incorporated opposition figures into his administration in a move seen as politically strategic, is expected to rely heavily on regional support to secure re-election.
However, the latest incident suggests that internal dissent and regional dissatisfaction could pose a significant challenge.
The video has since sparked widespread debate online, with many Kenyans echoing calls for equitable development and accountability among leaders.
