Punish Them Politically: Junet Urges Ruto to Divert Mt. Kenya Development to Nyanza
NAIROBI, KENYA — National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has ignited a fresh political storm, advising President William Ruto to “ruthlessly” handle the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking on the shifting political tides, the vocal lawmaker urged the Head of State to divert state development projects and “goodies” from the central region to Nyanza.
According to Junet, the voters of Mount Kenya have shown open ingratitude toward the President’s development agenda, despite backing him overwhelmingly in 2022.
The relationship soured completely following the high-profile impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Since his removal, Gachagua has reasserted his grip as the region’s political kingpin.

This defiance was solidified by the recent Ol-Kalou by-election, widely seen as a referendum against the current administration where the opposition’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) clinched victory.
Junet argues that instead of trying to win back an unappreciative base, President Ruto should punish Mount Kenya politically by starving them of state resources.
He boldly asserted that Nyanza is now a reliable, broad-based partner prepared to deliver its block vote to Ruto in 2027.
“If they do not appreciate what the President is doing, take those resources to regions like Nyanza that are ready to work with the government,” Junet intimated.
The provocative statements are expected to heighten ethnic tensions and redraw political alignments. As the country edges closer to the 2027 polls, President Ruto faces a high-stakes balancing act: finding a way to appease an agitated Mount Kenya or risking it all to embrace a new alliance in Nyanza.
