Protests Erupt in Mukurwe-ini Following Arrest of MP John Kaguchia
Tensions surged across Mukurwe-ini, Nyeri County, on Monday following news of the arrest of local Member of Parliament, Honorable John Kaguchia.
Demonstrators blocked major roads, lit bonfires, and chanted slogans demanding the immediate release of the lawmaker, who was taken into police custody earlier in the day.
Standoff at Royal Media Services
The arrest followed an overnight standoff at the Royal Media Services (RMS) headquarters in Nairobi.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) apprehending Kaguchia outside the broadcast studios on Monday morning after he had remained inside overnight.
The MP had previously posted on social media that heavily armed officers had surrounded the premises after his appearance on Inooro TV’s political talk show, Kiririmbi.

According to police reports, authorities moved to detain Kaguchia over alleged inciteful political remarks made during a rally in Kieni, Nyeri County.
Police contend that his utterances were intended to incite Mount Kenya residents to turn against supporters of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
Court Appearance and Public Reaction
Following his arrest, Kaguchia was taken to the DCI headquarters before being produced in court.
While entering the courthouse, the MP flashed a single-finger gesture—a sign widely recognized across Kenyan politics as symbolization of the “one term” slogan aimed at the current administration.
News of his court appearance quickly spread back to his constituency, fueling further anger among local residents who viewed the arrest as political intimidation.
Demonstrators called on security authorities to drop all charges, maintaining that the MP was targeted for expressing opposition views.
Local security personnel have been deployed to maintain order in Mukurwe-ini as local authorities urge calm amidst ongoing judicial proceedings.
