Kindiki Responds to ODM Demands for Deputy President Seat, Urges Focus on Re-election
MARALAL, SAMBURU COUNTY — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has spoken out following days of mounting political pressure from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) over the second-in-command position ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a community empowerment event in Maralal, Samburu County, Kindiki called on ODM and other partner factions within the broad-based government to halt political jockeying and focus on securing President William Ruto’s re-election.
The Deputy President’s remarks follow intensified demands from ODM leadership, who have spent the past week angling for the deputy presidency as a key condition for supporting the administration’s 2027 bid.

Within ODM ranks, key figures—including Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, Mining CS Ali Hassan Joho, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga—have been fronted as preferred candidates for the seat.
However, ODM’s push has met stiff resistance from Mount Kenya East leaders. Regional allies have vehemently defended Kindiki, insisting that the DP position belongs to their region and warning external parties against attempting to alter the political arrangement.
Addressing the crowd in Samburu, Kindiki urged all broad-based government partners to avoid premature power struggles and focus on service delivery and electoral victory.
According to Kindiki, political leaders must first prioritize securing the presidency, noting that a victorious presidential campaign creates a government stable enough to accommodate those who might lose or miss out on specific positions.
Kindiki’s message serves as a direct rebuttal to coalition partners, drawing a clear line against internal tussles for his seat while reinforcing the need for unity within the ruling administration.
