Kakamega Residents Lecture Governor Barasa Following Attack on Former DP Gachagua
KAKAMEGA, KENYA — Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa has found himself under intense pressure after launching a scathing political attack against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The political storm began shortly after Gachagua, accompanied by a high-profile entourage including former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malalah, made a dramatic entry into Shianda market, Kakamega County, for a major political rally.
Governor Barasa quickly publicly condemned the visit, accusing the former Deputy President of coming to the Western region solely to spew “tribal profiling politics” rather than bringing meaningful economic development to the area.
However, Barasa’s remarks have backfired, sparking a strong counter-reaction from Kakamega residents.

Local voters and traders in Shianda hit back at the county boss, urging him to cease his political obsession with Gachagua, who is not contesting any local elective seat in Kakamega. Instead, disgruntled residents demand that the Governor focus entirely on fulfilling his service delivery mandate.
“We did not elect Governor Barasa to monitor Rigathi Gachagua’s movements or manage national politics,” stated a local trader at the Shianda market. “We elected him to fix our roads, improve our health facilities, and deliver on his own promises. Gachagua is not vying in Kakamega; our Governor needs to work for the people who put him in office.”
The mounting public backlash signals growing impatience among the electorate regarding political sideshows.
Local leaders have echoed the residents’ sentiments, cautioning Barasa against using national political divisions to deflect from pressing county issues.
With the public demanding direct accountability over political rhetoric, the Governor now faces the uphill task of shifting the county conversation back to tangible development to win back his disgruntled constituents.
