NAIROBI, Kenya — Siaya County Governor James Orengo has sent a clear message that he will not be cowed by shifting political tides, pulling an unexpected move just days after being threatened with an ouster.
Despite mounting pressure from critics and threats of an impeachment motion in the Siaya County Assembly, Orengo has intensified his public engagements.
The Senior Counsel ran into a political storm after the county’s majority whip and regional MCAs threatened him with impeachment.
He stands accused of undermining women leadership following controversial verbal attacks directed at Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
Defying the backlash, Governor Orengo made a surprise visit to the family of the late Rex Masai in Nairobi.
Masai was tragically shot and killed during the historic 2024 Finance Bill protests. The high-profile case remains active in court, with a highly anticipated judgment expected in the coming months.
Political analysts view Orengo’s visit to the grieving family as a calculated tactical maneuver.

By honoring Masai’s memory, Orengo is seen as actively aligning himself with the youth—a massive, volatile voting bloc poised to radically reshape the country’s political dynamics ahead of the 2027 general election.
“Orengo is tapping into the raw energy of the youth movement, positioning himself as a defender of their struggles,” noted one Nairobi-based analyst.
Furthermore, observers point out that the Siaya governor is rapidly reclaiming his revolutionary political mojo following the recent passing of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Long known as a “Young Turk” and a master of legal and street activism, Orengo is seemingly stepping into the leadership vacuum.
Rather than retreating to local county politics under the threat of impeachment, Orengo’s national-scale defiance signals that he intends to have a massive, defining say in Kenya’s post-Odinga political landscape.
