NAIROBI, Kenya — A birthday tribute from Siaya Governor James Orengo to Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has set social media ablaze, sparking intense political speculation across the country.
Sifuna, the vocal Nairobi Senator, celebrated his birthday today amidst a wave of congratulatory messages from supporters, many of whom boldly crowned him the “incoming president.” However, it was Orengo’s highly calculated message that truly startled Kenyans and ignited a fierce debate online.
Taking to his social media platforms, Governor Orengo praised the embattled Secretary-General, using language that many political pundits believe carries heavy succession undertones.
“Edwin Sifuna is a true son of Baba Raila Odinga and a real Kenyan patriot, who stood with him in good and bad times,” Orengo wrote.

Why the Message Has Left Kenyans Startled
The phrasing of the message has raised eyebrows due to the current political landscape within ODM. By explicitly labeling Sifuna as a “true son of Baba,” Orengo—a veteran politician and close ally of Raila Odinga—seemed to be subtly endorsing the Nairobi Senator as a potential heir to the opposition throne.
Kenyans on social media quickly reacted to the post, with many noting that the timing is highly strategic given the ongoing internal restructuring within the party.
- The Loyalist Stamp: Orengo’s emphasis on Sifuna standing by Odinga “in good and bad times” is being viewed as a direct jab at internal rebels.
- The Next Generation: Netizens are debating whether this marks a official passing of the torch to the younger generation within the Orange party.
While Sifuna is currently navigating turbulent waters as the party’s Secretary-General, this powerful endorsement from a senior counsel and governor adds massive weight to his rising political profile.
