Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has received a stern warning ahead of his anticipated political engagements in Nakuru, days after his convoy was attacked in Othaya, Nyeri County, in an incident that sparked nationwide debate over political intolerance.
Gachagua, who has openly positioned himself as a key critic of President William Ruto’s administration, has intensified his political activities as the country edges closer to the next electoral cycle.
His recent tour of Othaya turned chaotic after a group of youths disrupted his meeting, forcing security personnel to intervene. No serious injuries were reported, but the incident raised concerns about rising political tensions.
Before the dust could settle, Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika issued a public warning, stating that Gachagua would not be allowed to use Nakuru as a platform to promote tribal or divisive politics.
In remarks captured in a video that has since circulated widely online, Kihika emphasised that Nakuru is a cosmopolitan county home to Kenyans from diverse communities who live and work together.
“Nakuru is a city for all Kenyans. We will not allow any leader to come here and divide people along ethnic lines,” Kihika said, adding that political competition should be based on ideas and development agendas rather than identity.
Her comments have triggered mixed reactions on social media and in political circles. Supporters of the governor have applauded her stance, arguing that leaders must be held accountable for rhetoric that could inflame ethnic tensions.
Others, however, accused Kihika of attempting to curtail Gachagua’s freedom of movement and political expression, insisting that he should be allowed to campaign freely like any other leader.
Gachagua has not directly responded to the Nakuru warning, but allies close to him argue that he is being unfairly targeted for speaking out against the government.
Political analysts say the unfolding exchanges highlight the increasingly charged atmosphere as realignments take shape ahead of future elections.
As investigations into the Othaya incident continue, calls are growing for restraint, dialogue, and respect for democratic freedoms to prevent further escalation.
