The Riverside Abduction by Ugandan Security Operatives
On November 16, 2024, Besigye and Obeid Lutale arrived in Kenya. They went to a Riverside apartment building for a scheduled book launch. Moments later, the pair entered a building elevator.
Ugandan intelligence operatives ambushed them inside the lift. Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence officers executed the swift abduction. Lt Col Ephraim Byaruhanga and Col Peter Ahimbisibwe led the operation. They forcefully moved both men across the border without judicial extradition.
Justice Emmanuel Baguma Dismisses Abduction Application
Besigye and Lutale later challenged the illegal rendition before the High Court. They argued that cross-border abduction violated fundamental constitutional rights. However, High Court Judge Emmanuel Baguma dismissed their legal application.
Judge Baguma ruled that the defense failed to prosecute the case properly. The court noted that counsel failed to appear on time. Consequently, the court ordered the treason trial to proceed without delay.

Political Background and Gravest Treason Allegations
Besigye has a long and complex political history in Uganda. He previously served as President Yoweri Museveni’s personal physician during the bush war.
He later broke ranks to become Uganda’s fiercest opposition leader.

“He was standing and suddenly fell,” party official Harold Kaija stated. Prison officers quickly carried the 70-year-old leader to an ambulance. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, confirmed he required urgent medical evaluation.
