Drama at Kirinyaga Funeral as UDA MP Interrupts Gachagua Address, Chaos Erupts
Tensions in the Mount Kenya region escalated on Friday after dramatic scenes unfolded during a burial ceremony in Kirinyaga County, where a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Member of Parliament allegedly disrupted a virtual address by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
According to a video that has since gone viral, mourners were briefly thrown into confusion when Mwea MP Mary Maingi reportedly grabbed a microphone and halted Gachagua’s speech, which was being relayed through a mobile phone.
The former Deputy President was addressing the gathering via a call facilitated by local leaders, including an MCA who had connected him to the public address system.
Witnesses at the scene claim the MP, who is allied to President William Ruto, appeared agitated and forcefully interrupted the session, accusing Gachagua of using the solemn event to advance political attacks.

In the ensuing scuffle, the MCA holding the phone was allegedly pushed aside as the MP seized control of the microphone, sparking a heated confrontation among leaders and mourners.
The incident highlights the deepening political rift in the vote-rich Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Once a stronghold of support for President Ruto, the region is increasingly witnessing divisions following Gachagua’s impeachment and his apparent fallout with the ruling party.
Political analysts warn that such public confrontations signal intensifying rivalry between factions aligned to the President and those backing Gachagua, who has recently emerged as a vocal critic of the government he once served.
Efforts to restore calm at the funeral were eventually successful, allowing the ceremony to proceed, albeit under heightened tension. Neither Gachagua nor the MP had issued an official statement by the time of publication.
The viral video continues to spark mixed reactions online, with Kenyans expressing concern over the growing trend of political clashes spilling into social and cultural events.
