Tensions are rising ahead of the highly anticipated Olkalau by-election, with fresh political developments threatening to reshape the contest and complicate the opposition’s strategy.
The seat, previously held by the Jubilee Party, has attracted significant attention from major political players, including the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Democracy for the Citizens Party.
In a statement that has stirred debate, former Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni urged opposition parties, particularly DCP, to step aside and support Jubilee’s candidate.
Kioni argued that since the late area MP was elected on a Jubilee ticket, the party deserves the opportunity to retain the seat.
His remarks were made during a press briefing, where he emphasized the importance of political goodwill and respect for party legacy.

However, Kioni’s sentiments have not been well received across the opposition divide. Allies of DCP have dismissed the proposal, insisting that their party stands a stronger chance of clinching the seat.
They have instead called on Jubilee to withdraw and rally behind DCP to present a united opposition front.
The disagreement now poses a significant challenge to Rigathi Gachagua, who has been working to consolidate opposition forces ahead of future political contests.
Analysts warn that a divided opposition could hand a strategic advantage to UDA, which is keen on capturing the seat and expanding its influence in the region.
With campaigns expected to intensify in the coming weeks, the Olkalau by-election is shaping up to be a fierce political battleground.
Whether the opposition can resolve its internal wrangles or head into the race divided may ultimately determine the outcome of what is now becoming a high-stakes contest.
