Tension briefly flared in Kitui County after a man was assaulted by a section of the crowd during a political rally attended by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and leaders from the opposition coalition.
According to a widely circulated video, the rally had been proceeding peacefully as Kalonzo and his team addressed supporters on key political and economic issues. However, the mood quickly shifted when an unidentified man shouted “two terms” in apparent support of President William Ruto.
The chant angered some attendees, who reportedly turned on him, subjecting him to kicks and blows. The situation escalated rapidly, forcing Kalonzo to halt his speech midway and intervene. Security personnel and a few leaders rushed to the scene as the Wiper party leader appealed for calm.

Kalonzo condemned the act, urging supporters to exercise tolerance despite political differences. He emphasized that rallies should remain platforms for democratic expression, not violence. “We must allow divergent views. Violence has no place in our politics,” he said, calling on his supporters to maintain peace.
The opposition leader also used the moment to criticize President Ruto’s administration, accusing it of focusing on “sideshows” instead of addressing the needs of Kenyans. He urged the government to prioritize service delivery and accountability, adding that leadership should be judged by performance.
The incident highlights growing political tensions ahead of the 2027 general election, with leaders increasingly calling for restraint among their supporters. Observers warn that such confrontations, if unchecked, could undermine democratic engagement.
Authorities have yet to comment on whether action will be taken against those involved in the assault. Meanwhile, Kalonzo’s message of peace and tolerance continues to resonate, as leaders across the political divide face mounting pressure to rein in their supporters and promote non-violent political participation.
