Didmus Barasa Stuns Bungoma Residents with Plan to Distribute Free Mattresses
BUNGOMA, Kenya — Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa has stirred intense debate across Bungoma County following an unconventional campaign pledge captured in a viral video, promising to buy mattresses for all residents if elected governor.
In the video circulating widely across social media platforms, the outspoken lawmaker lamented the state of poverty in the region, claiming that a significant portion of the population is forced to sleep on bare floors without proper bedding.
Addressing a crowd, Barasa stated that basic living conditions ought to be prioritized and declared his intention to launch a county-wide distribution exercise once he assumes office.

“The level of poverty in our county is unacceptable,” Barasa observed, arguing that basic bedding is a human dignity issue that past leadership has ignored. “When elected governor, my administration will purchase smooth, comfortable mattresses for households sleeping on bare ground across Bungoma.”
The pledge comes as campaign rhetoric intensifies ahead of the gubernatorial race. Political analysts view the move as a targeted appeal to low-income, grassroots voters, while opponents have dismissed the initiative as a populistic publicity stunt designed to score cheap political points without offering long-term economic development plans.
Locals remain sharply divided over the announcement. While some vulnerable residents welcomed the initiative as immediate relief, critics argue that the county’s budget should focus on healthcare, agricultural empowerment, and infrastructure rather than direct household hand-outs.
As the battle for Bungoma’s top seat escalates, Barasa’s mattress promise underscores the growing tension between direct welfare handouts and traditional policy-driven campaigns. Whether the bold promise will secure him the necessary votes remains to be seen as voters weigh their options.
