NAIROBI, Kenya — A political storm is brewing in the Kisii region following a viral video online that signals a major shift in the 2027 presidential race. The footage delivers a substantial political blow to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i after one of his most dependable allies, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, seemingly shifted his allegiance to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
Dr. Matiang’i, who was recently endorsed as the Jubilee Party’s presidential candidate and appointed its deputy party leader, has been actively mobilizing support across the country to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.

This unexpected declaration has caught many by surprise, given Onyonka’s prominent presence at numerous strategic rallies supporting Matiang’i’s state house bid just months prior.
The endorsement has ignited intense debate across social media platforms, with political analysts viewing it as a severe fracture in Matiang’i’s regional base.
Supporters of Sifuna’s political movement have celebrated the move as a major boost to his national appeal, while Jubilee loyalists downplay the video, calling it a temporary political realignment.
With the 2027 general election drawing closer, this sudden defection underscores the fluid nature of Kenyan alliances. Whether Dr. Matiang’i can steady his ship and reclaim the absolute loyalty of the Gusii backyard remains to be seen, but for now, the viral video has undeniably altered the political calculus.
