This latest incident comes barely days after the nation was plunged into deep mourning following a horrific midnight inferno at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County. In that tragedy, flames tore through the Meline Waithera Dormitory, which housed over 220 students.
Terrified students were trapped on the upper floors because an emergency door was reportedly locked, forcing several girls to jump through the windows. The tragedy left 16 students dead—many burnt beyond recognition—and 79 others injured.
President William Ruto and Education Minister Julius Ogamba led the nation in mourning, promising swift accountability.
Investigation progress into the Utumishi Girls tragedy points directly toward foul play. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since arrested eight students as persons of interest in what detectives suspect was a planned arson attack.
Survivors revealed to first responders that a student allegedly lit a mattress with a match before the fire rapidly engulfed the facility.
As investigations intensify in Gilgil, the fresh inferno at Sameta Boys in Kisii County heightens fears over systemic gaps in school safety preparedness and an alarming resurgence of school arson across Kenya.
