MUMIAS, KENYA — Tensions escalated sharply in Mumias town, Kakamega County, following violent clashes between rival political groups that forced businesses to close and left residents scrambling for safety.
The chaos erupted when a motorcade led by the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader and former Kakamega Senator, Cleophas Malala, was ambushed.
Video footage capturing the incident shows a peaceful afternoon quickly turning chaotic as a group of youths, allegedly allied to Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, began pelting Malala’s convoy with stones.
Retaliation and Business Paralysis
In a rapid and violent response, supporters accompanying Malala countered the attackers. The two factions engaged in a fierce stone-throwing battle and traded blows using crude weapons, turning the busy streets into a virtual battleground.

Helpless traders and shoppers were caught in the crossfire, prompting business owners to hurriedly shutter their shops to protect their merchandise and escape the flying projectiles.
“We were just operating normally when stones started flying everywhere. Everyone had to run for cover and close down,” noted a local trader who witnessed the midday melee.
Political Blame Game Ahead of 2027
Speaking shortly after the dust settled, a furious Malala strongly condemned the violence, pointing an accusing finger directly at the county leadership. He claimed that Governor Barasa had intentionally organized and funded the goons to block him from accessing Mumias Town and addressing the local residents.
“You cannot use violence to silence the will of the people,” Malala stated, firmly declaring that the incident would not derail his political ambitions.
Looking ahead to the political landscape, the former senator sent a stern warning to his rival, vowing to mobilize voters and decisively unseat Barasa in the upcoming 2027 gubernatorial election. Local authorities have since been called upon to investigate the skirmishes and restore calm to the area.
