NAIROBI, Kenya — A Nairobi family is living in fear following intense bullying of their young son who shares a name with President William Ruto. The situation highlights a growing and dangerous trend of political animosity spilling over into the lives of ordinary citizens.
The boy’s mother, Diana Naomi, revealed that she named her son “William Ruto” in September 2022 out of deep admiration for the Head of State. However, the child, who is currently in Pre-Primary 2 (PP2), has now become a target for his peers.
According to Naomi, the boy faces constant taunts of “Ruto Must Go” during school breaks and parades. The harassment has become so severe that the child has begged to change his name or transfer schools entirely.
While Naomi has refused to change the name, her anxiety has escalated significantly due to recent violent incidents in the country.

She specifically cited the tragic death of Rachel Wandeto, a woman who succumbed to severe burns at Kenyatta National Hospital after being attacked by unknown assailants for having a tattoo of President Ruto on her chest.
Another similar arson attack was reported in Kibra.
“Since I saw that woman who was burnt, and another one in Kibra, I am terrified,” Naomi told journalists, expressing deep concern for her family’s safety.
The family is now demanding swift intervention from the school administration, including counseling and psychological support for the traumatized minor.
While the school has promised to handle the situation, Naomi has urged the public to separate politics from humanity.
“Politics comes and goes. We should be human enough to accommodate each other,” she pleaded, calling on Kenyans to exercise restraint and protect innocent children from political hostility.
