Two Dead, Scores Injured as Bus Carrying TUM Students Crashes in Nyando
NYANDO, Kenya — At least two people have died and dozens more sustained injuries after a bus carrying students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) lost control and crashed along the Awasi–Ahero highway in Nyando, Kisumu County.
The students were traveling in a five-bus convoy from Mombasa to Kisumu to attend the burial of former TUM student leader Elvis Otieno, popularly known as “Beast”, whose funeral was scheduled for Saturday, August 8. Preliminary reports indicate that one of the buses swerved out of control, leading to the fatal incident.
Rapid Emergency Response
Emergency responders and local residents swiftly dispatched to the scene to rescue passengers trapped in the wreckage.

Victims with minor injuries were evacuated to Lisa Hospital in Namba Okana, while those in critical condition were rushed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized care.
Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir confirmed the two fatalities and stated that county authorities coordinated response efforts by sending ambulances to assist with evacuations.
Governor Nassir appealed to the public and the TUM fraternity to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while official notifications are made to the affected families.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the accident, their families, and friends,” Nassir said.
Regional Leaders Express Grief
Siaya Governor James Orengo also mourned the victims, describing the crash as a devastating turn of events for young scholars embarking on a journey of solidarity.
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of several university students along the Awasi–Ahero highway. To the grieving families, friends, and the entire TUM comrade fraternity, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time,” Orengo shared.
Police have launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident.
