Fresh tensions have emerged in ongoing political realignments after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) introduced new conditions in its engagement with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), complicating coalition talks ahead of the next election cycle.
The negotiations, which have been viewed as a strategic move by President William Ruto to consolidate support in traditional ODM strongholds, now face uncertainty as ODM leaders shift their stance and pile pressure on the government.
Speaking in Mombasa during a meeting of ODM trustees, the party’s deputy leader Simba Arati declared that any further discussions would depend on the government settling what he described as long-overdue financial obligations to the party.

Arati claimed that ODM is owed billions of shillings in political party funding, which has allegedly not been remitted for an extended period.
He insisted that the funds are critical for strengthening party structures and supporting grassroots mobilization.
According to Arati, failure by the Kenya Kwanza administration to release the money would force ODM to reconsider its position and explore alternative political options.
The latest demand appears to have caught UDA officials off guard, raising questions about the future of the talks.
Insiders suggest that the ruling party had been banking on a smoother path to cooperation, particularly as it seeks to broaden its appeal in opposition-dominated regions.
Political analysts note that ODM’s shifting demands could be a bargaining strategy aimed at securing leverage, but also warn that prolonged disagreements risk derailing the talks entirely.
As both sides remain publicly non-committal about the next steps, the developments signal a potentially rocky road ahead for any formal coalition.
The outcome of these negotiations could significantly shape Kenya’s political landscape in the run-up to the next general election.
