A resurfaced video of William Ruto praising Irungu Kang’ata has stirred fresh political debate following the governor’s unexpected decision to part ways with the ruling party.
In the video, recorded ahead of the 2022 General Election, Ruto lauds Kang’ata as a “brave and principled leader” for abandoning the then-dominant Jubilee Party to join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
At the time, Kang’ata had resigned from his position as Senate Majority Whip, a move that Ruto framed as a bold stand for truth over political convenience.
However, the political landscape has since shifted dramatically. Kang’ata recently announced that he will not seek re-election on a UDA ticket in 2027, citing irreconcilable differences with party leadership.
According to the Murang’a governor, a meeting with President Ruto and senior UDA officials failed to resolve key concerns, prompting his decision to exit.

Among the issues he raised were what he described as increasing hostility toward opposition figures.
Kang’ata accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of failing to uphold democratic space, arguing that the government has instead turned its focus on suppressing dissent.
The emergence of the old video has added a layer of irony to the unfolding situation, with observers noting the contrast between Ruto’s past praise and the current fallout.
Political analysts suggest the clip underscores the fluid nature of Kenyan politics, where alliances can quickly shift depending on emerging interests and ideological differences.
Kang’ata has yet to publicly declare his next political move, but his departure from UDA is expected to influence the dynamics in the Mount Kenya region as the 2027 race begins to take shape.
Meanwhile, neither Ruto nor UDA officials have formally responded to the resurfaced video or Kang’ata’s latest remarks.
