Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah has hit back at Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata following claims that he pressured him to support President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
Kang’ata, who recently announced his departure from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), accused Ichung’wah during a press briefing of being among leaders pushing him to publicly back Ruto ahead of the 2027 general election.
His remarks have stirred debate within political circles, highlighting emerging divisions within the ruling coalition.
Responding publicly, Ichung’wah dismissed the allegations, maintaining that his previous remarks were not intended to exert pressure but to call out what he described as inconsistencies in Kang’ata’s political conduct.

He cited an earlier exchange at Kenneth Matiba Hospital, insisting that his comments were made openly and transparently.
The Majority Leader did not hold back, warning Kang’ata against involving his name in what he termed as “hypocritical politics.”
He referenced a past meeting in Lavington during the impeachment period, claiming it involved intense discussions and pressure from Kang’ata regarding his political ambitions.
Ichung’wah further alleged that the governor had previously sought influence in high-level political decisions, including lobbying for consideration in the Deputy President position.
He warned that he could make public details of their discussions, including claims related to the use of Murang’a county resources.
“Do you really want me to disclose full details of our Lavington meeting?” he posed.
He also accused Kang’ata of name-dropping to gain favor with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, urging him to handle his political affairs independently.
The exchange underscores growing tensions within Kenya Kwanza as political alignments begin to shift ahead of 2027.
