Tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have escalated following sharp remarks by Oburu Odinga targeting the party’s Secretary General Edwin Sifuna.
Speaking during an interview with a local radio station, Oburu did not hold back, dismissing Sifuna’s perceived influence in the party. “Sifuna is not a pope that we must beg him to stay in ODM,” he said, in remarks that have since sparked widespread reactions among supporters and political observers.
The interview comes amid ongoing wrangles within ODM over leadership direction and alleged attempts to replace Sifuna with Catherine Omanyo.
Sifuna has recently been vocal in calling for unity within the party while also raising concerns over what he terms as growing external influence, particularly linked to President William Ruto.

However, Oburu maintained that party discipline must be upheld, insisting that no individual is bigger than ODM. He stated that if Sifuna feels dissatisfied, he is at liberty to exit but should not create divisions within the party.
The remarks have highlighted deepening internal divisions within ODM, raising questions about the party’s cohesion ahead of future political engagements. Analysts warn that unless addressed, the growing rift could weaken the party’s unity and influence on the national stage.
