BATTLE FOR THE WEST: President Ruto’s Tactical EPRA Appointment Moves to Neutralize Sifuna’s Rising Influence

NAIROBI, Kenya — In a calculated political maneuver aimed at solidifying his foothold in the voter-rich Western region, President William Ruto has appointed former Bumula Member of Parliament Moses Wekesa Mwambu Mabonga as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

The strategic appointment, published in the Kenya Gazette, is widely viewed by political analysts as a deliberate move by the Head of State to check and counter the growing momentum of Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna in Western Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Western Kenya—comprising Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, and Trans Nzoia counties—has quickly turned into a fierce battleground as political realignments take shape.

Sifuna, a key vocal opposition figure and prominent Luhya voice, has recently intensified his grassroots campaigns and political rallies across the region, positioning himself as a central player in shaping the 2027 political landscape.

By elevating Hon. Mabonga, a staunch ally from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party and a influential operator in Bungoma County, President Ruto is seeking to anchor his administration’s presence with key local leaders capable of spearheading grassroots campaigns.

Accepting his new assignment, Hon. Mabonga expressed deep gratitude to President Ruto for entrusting him with the management of the key energy regulator.
