President William Ruto has revealed that he has enrolled for artificial intelligence (AI) classes at the Open University of Kenya (OUK), marking a major endorsement of the country’s first fully virtual university.
Speaking on Monday during the launch of the first phase of Konza Technopolis — the home of OUK — President Ruto said he was personally embracing digital learning to enhance his understanding of emerging technologies.
He urged other leaders to take advantage of the institution’s modern online infrastructure.
“I have enrolled myself as a student of AI here at the Open University. It will be the largest university in Kenya because we have put in place the most modern digital infrastructure to democratize education and make it affordable,” said the President.
Ruto disclosed that he had reached an agreement with Equity Group CEO James Mwangi to enroll 100,000 students by December 2026, up from the current 15,000 students drawn from 70 countries. The university currently offers 70 programmes and has forged 22 global partnerships.

The Head of State lauded the ongoing development at Konza Technopolis, noting that it symbolizes Kenya’s digital transformation and economic potential.
He said plans are underway to expand the Emali road, construct an airport, and connect water from Mount Kilimanjaro to the area.
Phase One of the Technopolis includes 40 kilometres of road networks, a wastewater reclamation plant capable of recycling 90 percent of used water, and a fresh water facility producing 7.5 million litres daily.
