President William Ruto has moved to defuse rising political tensions between Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General Hassan Omar, urging both factions to embrace unity under the broad-based government framework.
Speaking during a public address in Mombasa, the Head of State intervened directly in the escalating local friction fueled by early alignment efforts for the county’s gubernatorial seat.
With Governor Nassir seeking a second term and Omar positioning himself as a leading contender, rivalry between ODM and UDA grassroots networks in the coastal city has intensified despite their leadership sharing a national broad-based coalition.
Addressing the two coastal leaders and their supporters, President Ruto emphasized that the current political arrangement requires mutual accommodation and cohesion.
He reminded the political class in Mombasa that both parties are part of one unified administration, calling on local leaders to avoid public squabbles, personal feuds, and internal factionalism.
The President urged all involved to live and work together as brothers sharing a common national vision.
Reframing the political dynamic, Ruto declared that the real political opponents of the administration are not within the broad-based coalition, but rather external critics who lack substantive developmental plans, strategic vision, and viable public policies for the country.
He urged the regional leadership to redirect their focus toward defending government programs, fulfilling economic promises, and delivering infrastructure projects to coastal residents.
The President’s intervention comes amidst ongoing efforts by the executive to maintain stability within the broad-based political framework across key regions.
By stepping in to mediate between Nassir and Omar, Ruto signaled his administration’s determination to prevent premature local electoral competition from fracturing the coalition’s unity.
