The former Orange Democratic Movement Party leader Hon Raila Odinga passed away last year in October while undergoing treatment in India.
He was the party leader of ODM and also served as the first ever Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya under the late President Mwai Kibaki during the Grand Coalition Government.
The family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, alongside the National Steering Committee for his memorial, has announced Migwena Cultural and Sports Ground in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County, as the official venue for his first anniversary celebrations scheduled for October 15.
Addressing journalists during a press briefing, committee chairperson Professor Adams Oloo detailed the month-long commemorative itinerary designed to honor the legacy of the prominent opposition icon.
The climax of the national tributes will take place at the historic Migwena Grounds, a location selected for its deep historical and emotional significance to the Odinga family.
Oloo noted that the grounds hold symbolic heritage as the location where Raila’s father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, met his mother, Mary Ajuma.
The main event on October 15 will follow a private candle-lighting vigil led by Mama Ida Odinga at Raila’s final resting place in Kang’o ka Jaramogi on October 14.
The public thanksgiving service and celebration of life will bring together political leaders, international dignitaries, grassroots supporters, and members of the public to reflect on his decades-long struggle for democratic governance, institutional reforms, and social justice.
The steering committee emphasized that the anniversary will be a non-partisan, unifying national event centered around three key themes: the people, the struggle, and the aspiration.
Activities surrounding the anniversary will include academic lectures, cultural music, dance performances, sports tournaments, and nationwide tree-planting initiatives reflecting his multifaceted contributions to public life.
Organizers urged members of the public to attend the ceremonies in large numbers to celebrate the enduring legacy of the nation’s long-serving political leader.
