Nyamira High School Teacher Dies by Suicide After Alleged Gambling Loss

A high school teacher in Nyamira County was found dead by suicide on Thursday morning after allegedly losing a significant amount of money in a gambling bet.

The teacher, whose identity has not been disclosed, failed to report to school on Wednesday, prompting concern among his colleagues.

They went looking for him after he missed school and did not answer his phone throughout the day.

“We tried reaching him by phone, but it went unanswered all day,” one of the teachers said. The continued lack of response throughout the night led his colleagues to check on him at his house.

Upon arriving at his residence, they found the door locked from the inside, but the phone was still ringing without being answered.

Peering through the window, they discovered his body hanging from the roof with a shawl.

A colleague revealed that the deceased had confided in him about his financial difficulties.

“He had financial problems. He came to me and borrowed some cash and said he had many debts but was working on paying them,” the teacher stated.

The deceased, 27, had been employed by the school’s board of management for four years.

Another teacher mentioned that the deceased had borrowed about Sh50,000 from a friend and gambled it, only to lose the bet.

“The loss must have stressed him and led him to take his life to avoid repaying the amount,” the teacher speculated.

The tragic incident has shocked the school community, highlighting the severe impact of financial distress and gambling addiction.

The teachers and students are now grappling with the loss of their colleague and mentor, as they await further details from the ongoing investigation by local authorities.
