‘Not True’: Fred Matiang’i Dismisses Rumors of Joining Ruto’s Political Camp
NAIROBI, KENYA — Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has firmly debunked widespread online rumors suggesting he is planning to join President William Ruto’s re-election team.
The intense political speculation ignited after a photograph surfaced on social media showing Dr. Matiang’i in conversation with prominent leaders at the airport.
Political analysts quickly seized on the image, arguing that the former powerful minister had been “boxed into a corner” and was angling for an alignment with Kenya Kwanza insiders. In the photo, Matiang’i was seen chatting with Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Kisii Governor Simba Arati.
However, Dr. Matiang’i moved swiftly to clarify the context of the photograph, dismissing any political undertones. Describing the moment as a pure coincidence, the former CS explained that the interaction took place publicly at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) during routine travel

“This morning, after checking in at the Kenya Airways desk at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, I bumped into Kisii Governor Hon. Simba Arati and Suna East MP Hon. Junet Mohamed, who had also checked in and were travelling to Kisumu,” Matiang’i stated. “It was a chance encounter as each of us proceeded to board our flight.”
He strongly criticized the false narratives circulating on digital platforms, emphasizing that there was no premeditated agenda.
“Contrary to false claims circulating online, this was neither a meeting held last night nor a planned engagement. It was simply a chance encounter between leaders at the airport,” Matiang’i added.
Setting the record straight on his itinerary, Matiang’i confirmed he actually proceeded to Kisumu to join Siaya Governor James Orengo and People’s Liberation Party Leader Martha Karua for a church service at Apondo SDA Church in Ahero, signaling his presence alongside key opposition figures.
