Matiang’i Shifts Tone in Migori, Focuses on Opposition Unity and Base Consolidation
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has signalled a tactical turn in his political approach, emphasizing internal respect and regional consolidation within the United Opposition just days after delivering a scathing rebuke to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The political drama unfolded in Kisii County, where a sharp-tongued Matiang’i publicly called out Gachagua.
Addressing crowds during a regional tour, the former Cabinet Secretary accused the former Deputy President of causing more harm than good to the coalition’s cause.
Matiang’i urged Gachagua to abandon political bullying and adopt genuine teamwork if the opposition hopes to challenge President William Ruto’s administration effectively in the 2027 General Election.

However, speaking just a day later in neighbouring Migori County, Matiang’i struck a noticeably more conciliatory tone.
Addressing local leaders and supporters, he called for mutual respect among all principal figures within the United Opposition movement.
He noted that maintaining mutual regard among key players is the only way to safeguard political stability and build a formidable coalition ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
Political observers note that despite the exchange, Matiang’i’s latest moves indicate he is strategically aligning with the broader advice circulating across opposition ranks: securing one’s backyard before venturing into national power negotiations.
By actively touring Kisii and Migori, the former “super minister” is focusing on fortifying his home political turf across the Nyanza region.
